Get Real Information on Assam State Museum
Assam State Museum, located at Ambari in Guwahati. It is near the Dighali Pukhuri tank. It is a place loaded with a vibrant display of the culture, ethnology, tradition of North East. This museum is a representation of ancient sculptures, traditional artifacts, livelihood, the economy of Assam and much more. Assam State Museum is an effort to show the Assamese and other Northeastern cultures and traditions to the whole world.
Timings, Ticket rates
The museum remains open in all seasons but with slight modification in the timing.It will make sense if I break it down for you.
(i) March – September: 10 A.M to 4:30 P.M.
(ii) October – February: 10 A.M to 3:45 P.M.
(The ticket counter remain closed from 1 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. and it remain closed on state holidays)

Outdoor
Assam State Museum has a main building with a garden in front of it. When visitors enter, they will see three cannons displayed in the front garden.At the backside, some more cannons, cannon balls, and some stone sculptures are displayed.
Indoor
Now let’s come to the main building. This building is consists of three stories. All of them have different departments. Now let’s check it out what they have.The ground floor is of two parts – Arms and Ammunition Gallery at the right-hand side and Sculpture Gallery on the left-hand side.
Weapons and Ammunition gallery
This gallery is a display of ancient arms and cannons with some modern arms used at the time of world war II. This section is not much bigger. It will hardly take 10 minutes to cover it.
The Sculpture Gallery
But, this gallery has a huge amount of sculptures of the ancient time.If you are an avid art person, then you will be stunned with the collection.The period of these sculptures is basically from 7th century to 14th century. These are of stones.
The first part of this gallery is consists of sculptures of God and Goddess of Hindu Religion. In the entrance, the gallery showcases a big beautiful statue of Nataraj made of stone. Other sculptures include various shades of lord Vishnu and Siva. The Second section contains the same with different variations in the designs of sculptures.A small subset of this part represents the Buddha statues and Tirthankara of Jainism. It reveals the rich knowledge of the art of Assam during ancient era. After overseeing this gallery, you will be bound to think that how old people made such beautiful sculptures without modern equipment and technologies.
The Gallery of Village life
Now, come to the first floor, i.e., the gallery of village life. It is a very colorful as well as an interesting section. This gallery gives the basic idea of a village life. It is a grand display of Assamese culture, with the help of some miniature model of houses like Naam ghar(a place where people gather and pray God), Panchayat system, Sericulture, Cultivation, Musical instruments, Fishing tools, Pottery, etc. A typical village home is also here with kitchen, bedrooms, loom, backyard, etc. You can go inside the model to get a feel of Assamese village house of pre- modern era. Besides this, a textile section is here on the same floor. Garments of different communities of Northeast Indian are displayed here.You will taste life like experience overall.
Ethnography Gallery
Now let’s move towards the ethnography part on the Second floor of the building.It is a rich display of communities of Assam and other states of North East. It has included custom, tradition, house structure, fishing tools, musical instruments, garments and objects of the material culture of different communities like Assamese, Karbi, Rabha, Mishing, Bodo, Deuri, Tiwa, Khelmas, Kuki, Jemi naga, Hmar etc. This museum has created some miniature model to give an essence of the environment of these communities. You will see a model of their houses, people, surroundings of houses etc. From all these, a visitor will gain the knowledge of livelihood of communities of North East.
